What we plan to achieve
  • To increase the use of public transport to 10 percent of all passenger journeys by 2018.
  • Improve the quality and frequency of public transport to attract patronage, enhance social inclusion and improve the environment.
  • To make better use of current public transport assets.
  • Integrate public transport with urban development to facilitate its use and to enhance urban amenity.
  • Give priority to public transport over other road users.
  • Facilitate the introduction of improved and increased services.
The Passenger Transport Network

South Australia’s passenger transport system is extensive and responds to many community and individual access needs.

The services we provide

Adelaide Metro logo Adelaide Metro
The Adelaide Metro brings the Adelaide public transport system together including information and marketing.
The partners in the provision of these public transport services are;
TransAdelaide TransAdelaide
A Government agency that provides the Adelaide Metro train and tram services.
Torrens Transit Torrens Transit
Provides Adelaide Metro bus services to the Outer North East, North West, North South, Eastern and Western suburbs.
SouthLink SouthLink
Provides Adelaide Metro bus services to the Outer North and Outer South suburbs.
Transitplus Transitplus
Provides Adelaide Metro bus services to the Hills and some regional services.

The companies providing Adelaide Metro passenger services are contracted to provide these services for five years with an option to extend for a further five years subject to satisfactory performance and agreement on price.

The contracts include performance benchmarks which set acceptable standards for on-time running, customer satisfaction and passenger security, fare compliance, management of infrastructure, maintaining Quality Assurance status and service review and improvements.

Bus SA Bus SA
Bus SA brings together the regional bus operators as partners in the Bus SA network to provide passenger services to regional South Australia.

Key characteristics of the passenger transport system include;
  • 43.27 million revenue kilometres in Adelaide Metro services per year;
  • 61.2 million Adelaide Metro Metroticket journeys;
  • 4,492 kilometres of Adelaide Metro bus routes, 120 kilometres of train line, 11 kilometres of tram line, 12 kilometres of O-Bahn;
  • 237 bus routes, 6 train routes, 1 tram route and 7,500+ bus stops;
  • 807 buses, 94 trains, 15 trams, 920 taxis and 71 Access Taxis, and
  • over 1,000 country buses and 11 Community Passenger Networks providing about 3,200 trips per month.
Taxis, Access Taxis and Small Passenger Vehicles - all part of the passenger transport system

The passenger transport system is more than buses, trains and trams with over 8 million trips in metropolitan Adelaide made in taxis, Access Taxis and Small Passenger Vehicles. They are an important part of the Public Transport Division's work and an important part of our community.

Taxis

taxi at nightTaxis provide an important service for people who do not have access to private car transport or who do not use a car.

The Government, in recognition of the taxi industry's important role, established the Premier's Taxi Council. The Public Transport Division will provide secretariat support to the Council.

The Council's membership includes representatives of the central booking services, taxi drivers, operators, tourism and consumers advocates.

Access Taxis

Access Taxis provide a valuable service to people with disabilities and make a significant contribution to social equity in our community. Access Taxi licences are taxi licences with special conditions that require the operator to give a priority service to people with mobility difficulties.

Small Passenger Vehicles

Small Passenger Vehicles are also an integral part of the passenger transport system. Passenger vehicles with up to 12 seats (driver plus 11 passengers) are small passenger vehicles. They include what are often referred to as hire cars or chauffeured vehicles.
